THE US ROLE IN THE CURRENT CRISIS IN LATIN AMERICA

Frontline accounts from Mario Galvan, co-founder of the Zapatista Solidarity
Coalition, and Peace Action national board member

Saturday, August 10, 4pm to 6 pm
Mama Gaia's Cafe, Central Square, Cambridge (Central Square stop on Red Line,
walk to corner of Main St. and Mass Ave.)

General Strikes! Worthless currencies! Popular revolts in Argentina, Ecuador,
Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, against the IMF and privatization! In the last
few months, one country after another has erupted in dramatic displays of
people power, as poor and disenfranchised folks across Central and South
America reject the neoliberal policies of the International Monetary Fund,
World Bank, and corrupt US-backed politicians willing to sell out their own
people to stay in power.

After years of solidarity work with the Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico, Mario
was one of the only Americans to make it to Bolivia (due to Sept. 11) for the
international gathering of Peoples' Global Action, a worldwide network of
movements, mainly from the South. He traveled through Bolivia, Peru, Colombia
and Ecuador, meeting vocal locals and seeing firsthand the effects of US
foreign policy, Plan Colombia, the 'Drug War' and IMF-created disasters. He is
on a national tour speaking about his experiences, and about grassroots
resistance to this new colonialism we are witnessing today.
