Two Dead in NYC Police Shooting

         Filed at 1:02 a.m. EST

         By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- Two men were shot to death during
a confrontation with undercover police officers Friday
night when at least one person in their group displayed
what appeared to be guns, police said.

The incident occurred in Brooklyn around 9 p.m. when two
undercover narcotics officers were approached by five men,
         said Det. John Giammarino.

One of the men grabbed a gold chain hanging from the
neck of one of the officers, Giammarino said. Some in the
group allegedly displayed weapons, which police later
discovered were fake guns wrapped in black electrical tape
         to make them look real.

The other three suspects fled and were being sought,
         Giammarino said.

A security guard was fatally shot in a scuffle with an
undercover officer outside a Manhattan bar March 16
during a buy-and-bust operation. Another undercover
officer fatally shot an unarmed man in the Bronx borough
two weeks earlier, not far from where an unarmed African
immigrant was shot and killed last year by four white police
         officers.
