Last year, for the first time ever, the grad orientation
included events on diversity and sexual harassment/sexual violence.
The reason why orientation is an ideal time to bring up these topics
(other than the fact that new students are yet to be swamped with work!)
is that sexual violence is more prevalent in the beginning of the school
year, particularly for new students and, in regards to diversity training,
MIT is often a much more diverse community than the communities many
incoming grad students are coming from.

These events were possible due to a combination of a few students
(mostly Brice and Tamara) being willing to design and organize the
events and the GSC being willing to allow new ideas so long as
students would organize the new events. We got sponsorship from
the Chancellor's Office, the President's office, Health-ed,
Women's Studies, and last but not least, the Graduate Dean's Office
(thank you, Blanche.)

Both events were of a panel of speakers format to provide for a
range of viewpoints on each topic. The funds covered a speaker
fee, advertising materials and a dessert/coffee reception to serve
as a social gathering type draw.

The time is upon us to begin planning for next fall's orientation.
We encourage anyone who would like to see these programs continued
to meet this

wed 3/17 at 5pm
room 8-101

so we can discuss a bit before heading to the GSC orientation meeting.
The more people who take an active role, the more effective these events
will be.

In hope,
		Aimee

PS you don't have to be a graduate student to be interested in improving
our community on these fronts!
