#### About the Shaw’s/Star Market campaign ####

J. Sainsbury, a British multinational and parent company of Shaw’s
supermarkets, recently acquired the Star Market chain of supermarkets. Star
Market workers have been attempting to organize a union under the same union
that covers many Shaw’s employees, the United Food and Commercial Workers.
Unfortunately, Star employees have met heavy-handed resistance from managers
who have sunk to coercive and illegal behavior in order to crush the
workers’ attempts at organizing.

The company’s actions have led to a formal complaint by the National Labor
Relations Board, a federal government agency, for violation of the
employees’ right to organize. Help support Star workers!

* Workers are told not to speak to union organizers.

* Workers are forced to attend meetings and watch videos that misrepresent
the union and their rights to organize.

* Management performs surveillance on workers’ organizing activity.

* Workers in other Shaw’s union stores are having their health benefits held
hostage by management in order to make an example of those who are brave
enough to fight for a decent living.

#### About SLAP ####

Since its inception nearly a year and a half ago, the Student Labor Action
Project has played an integral role in student activism and offered
solidarity with local labor struggles. From the streets of Quebec and New
York to the classrooms and communities of Boston, we challenge the corporate
tyrannies that seek to undermine our unions, our democracy, and a decent
standard of living. In the tradition of non-violent resistance that Dr.
Martin Luther King espoused, we will take to the streets to demand justice
for workers, living wages, and the right to organize!
