Sustainable Living
SP275 - 6 units
Corrina Chase, Abby Popp, Jeffrey Steinfeld
http:/web.mit.edu/corrina/Public/sustainablelivingclass/
Do you care about the environment but feel powerless to make a difference?
Interested in "stainability" but don't know what it is, or how it could be
relevant to your life? Want to help make MIT a greener place to live by
designing and implementing your own project? Have a great idea but no support
to make it happen? This class may be for you.
Sustainable Living is a seminar being offered next spring. The class is a
hands-on approach to learning how to reduce the environmental impact of your
living area, home, and educational institution. Students will participate in
twice-weekly discussions and reading. Major units to be covered include MIT's
environmental movement and resources, the "footprint" of institutional living
spaces, personal environmental impacts, analysis of personal consumption, and
grass roots environmental activism. The seminar may also include guest
speakers
from the Boston area and optional field trips to view examples of successful
environmental change. At the same time, students will be designing and
completing their own projects to improve the sustainability of their personal
living space. A section of each class will be devoted to discussing
progress.
The seminar will culminate in a poster presentation of the projects.
