Genes and Society:
Impact of New Technologies on Law, Medicine, and Policy
This conference on the growing impact of new genetic technologies on
society will feature speakers such as The Honorable Stephen G. Breyer, U.S.
Supreme Court; Dr. Mary-Claire King, University of Washington; Dr. Eric S.
Lander, Whitehead Institute; Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Harvard Medical School;
Dr. Aristides A. Patrinos, Department of Energy; and Dr. Harold Varmus,
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Since the last Whitehead Policy
Symposium two years ago, the public has become even more aware of the
promise of new technologies for advancing medicine and public health, but
also more fearful of potential misuse. We have seen dramatic opposition to
genetically engineered foods in Europe and state laws in the U.S. that
strive to protect genetic privacy while leaving research and health care
intact.
"Genes and Society" is designed to meet the needs of physicians, academic
and corporate scientists, attorneys, genetic counselors, bioethicists,
journalists, legislators, consumer advocates, clergy, and others who wish
to explore the challenges ahead. In twelve sessions, nationally recognized
speakers will join the audience in lively discussions on topics ranging from
stem cell research and DNA forensics to behavioral genetics, the "food wars,"
and the legal issues surrounding tissue banks. Other topics include the
future of cancer therapy, human subjects research in genetics, and the
business of genomics.
