To use ron's terminology, it doesn't sound like a feature that something
should be stripped out during the extract process, without preventing it
from being entered in the first place. I also find it interesting that
these lists never worked through mit.edu but did through athena*.mit.edu.
In any case, I don't see a reason for preventing periods from appearing in
listnames (does it have anything to do with full name aliases?) and since
it had been working on athena.mit.edu we should make it work again.
