moira client and "register" inconsistent

I attempted to register a temporary employee who didn't
want to use his SSN for an ID number, so we agreed to use
his Mass ID number instead.
This aparently starts with a letter, which the Moira client
will happily let me add to the database. The "register"
client however won't let me type a letter in the ID field.
