To keep everyone informed on a confusing situation described in the
attached message: all messages addressed to any list that includes me as
a USER are being bounced if they happen to be routed through
Athena-as-well.mit.edu. If routed through either Athena.mit.edu or
mit.edu there is no problem. The bounce is such that no one on the list
receives a copy of the message. The lists affected are:
risks bug-sms
moira-comments openbook-redist
moiradev moira
bug-moira krb-protocol
netusers net-users
A temporary workaround is to address mail for those lists explicitly
via mit.edu, e.g. <bug-moira@mit.edu>.

Peter Neumann just sent me the attached bounce, which occurred sometime
Monday afternoon. I think I have figured out the problem. When I telnet
to athena.mit.edu port 25 and expn risks, the first thing in the list is a
forwarding address for me of Saltzer@lcs.mit.edu. It is apparent from the
form of the address (it is the only one in the expansion that includes a
full name as a comment) that it was derived with the help of an
/etc/password entry, probably on athena.mit.edu. When I do the same to
athena-as-well, it responds

Note that that is the ENTIRE response to expn. I think that risks is not
getting through to ANYONE when it happens to be routed through
athena-as-well. If athena-as-well wasn't set up to include a local user
named "Saltzer" it won't be able to handle Moira's mailing lists that
include my name as USER.
I think we are back looking at the bug in which Moira does forwarding of
athena names to foreign mailboxes by putting USER:foreign-address pairs in
the generated /usr/lib/aliases. It then leaves USER names in mailing
lists, expecting the mailhub will be able to translate them to forwarding
strings. The mailhub correctly translates incoming mail addressed to both
<saltzer> and <Saltzer> to <Saltzer@ptt.lcs.mit.edu>, but it fails to
translate <Saltzer> when found in a list, probably because of a
case-folding bug in recursive mail-list expansion.
One possible fix for this (it might also fix some other mysteries I have
noticed in sendmail forwarders and that probably also strike the Athena
mailer) would be for Moira to put translated foreign addresses directly in
mail lists, rather than relying on sendmail to do the translation.
