Date: Thu, 20 Jun 91 18:26:32 -0400 From: Mark Rosenstein <mar@MIT.EDU> To: moira@ATHENA.MIT.EDU In-Reply-To: geer@irc.cbm.dec.com's message of Thu, 9 May 91 16:13:32 -0400 <9105092013.AA07277@uncertainty> Several people have asked about having Moira manage IP addresses. This is certainly doable, with one gotcha: you have to make sure that Moira can bootstrap itself and never needs information in a running nameserver before it can update that server. This has been on my to-do list for a while here. The way we plan on doing it is to have an object called a subnet with a name, a net number, and a description. Machines are then assigned to a subnet, and moira can assign a suitable host number on the subnet. For instance, we might have a subnet called "Student-center" with number 18.71.0.0, and netmask 255.255.0.0. When machine SPEAKER.MIT.EDU is assigned to that subnet, Moira can assign it a host number that is unique among all numbers of machines on that subnet. Does this model fit what people need at other sites as well? This might as well go in in a way that is generally useful and not specific to MIT. -Mark
