Somebody recently spammed the spelunkers list, and as a member of the
owner list (spelunkers-acl), I got a bunch of bounces from addresses
that were deleted quite a while ago. (The list normally gets maybe 2-3
messages a semester, so I hadn't seen these previously.)
I looked into this matter, and it appears that there are several
discrepancies between the spelunkers list according to moira and who
actually receives email sent to spelunkers@mit.edu:
% blanche -i spelunkers
List: spelunkers
Description: This is the mailing list of the MIT Caving Club. It was created (and is used for) keeping members of the MIT Caving Club informed of the club's activities.
Flags: active, public, and visible
spelunkers is a maillist and is not a group
Owner: LIST spelunkers-acl
Last modified by smfarrit with blanche on 17-dec-1997 23:09:28
The above shows that the list hasn't been modified since yesterday at
23:09:28. Assuming everything is behaving the way it should, the info
in moira should therefore be the same as the info the mailservers have.
% blanche spelunkers > /tmp/spelunkers-moira
% add consult
% expn spelunkers > /tmp/spelunkers-mailservers
I created an emacs macro to edit the expn output that I dumped into
/tmp/spelunkers-mailservers, changing lines of the form:
250-<string@REMOTEHOST.COM>
250-<localuser@PO8.LOCAL>
to lines of the form:
string@remotehost.com
localuser
and then I sorted the output. (You'll have to either trust me on this
one, or blanche and expn the two lists and see for yourself.)
Finally, I diff'ed the two lists:
% diff /tmp/spelunkers-moira /tmp/spelunkers-mailservers

If the moira update (and, indeed moira updates from months ago) had
happened as they should have, the above diff command should have
returned nothing.
So my questions are:
1) Can you figure out why the spelunkers list does not appear to be
taking updates from moira and fix the problem?
2) If yes, would you please do so?
Once the spelunkers list is again properly taking moira updates, I will
take the union of both lists and make that the spelunkers list. Then,
after waiting a day for the moira update, I will send mail to the list
explaining what happened and advising people who had previously removed
themselves or asked to be removed to please do so again.
Thanks in advance.
Jeff Bigler
