Accomplishments past period:
- Met with IBM and Business partner to review new configuration options
due to Compaq SAN compatibility issues with the IBM 3494 ATL.
- Followup meeting with IBM rep and Business partner to review another
- Two followup conference calls, one with IBM P690 product support and
one with Tivoli product manager regarding timing of support for Linux
on both software and hardware platforms. Determined that although
hardware will support native Linux next month, Tivoli Linux server
support will not be available until first quarter 2003.
- Met with Compaq Technical representative. We talked about support for
the IBM 3494 tape library with Compaq Storageworks SAN switch.
Followup email from this meeting indicated that qualifying this
configuration with Compaq is cost prohibitive and could pose future
support/cost issues.
- Completed TSM VM baseline cost model.
- Continued to collect data regarding implementation plan.
- Continued work on Final Report.
- Solicited feedback from TSM user list regarding TSM in Sun Solaris
environment.
- Spoke with Tivoli regarding their recommended SUN configuration.
- Researched, revised and cost out new TSM Sun configuration based on
new SUN hardware information.
Goals for next period:
- Modify TSM VM cost model for UNIX environment to determine monthly
- Make final recommendation decision(s).
- Finish draft and review final report.
- Complete implementation timeline.
Issues:
- Hardware compatibility issues trying to fit TSM into existing
infrastructure delays project.
- IBM aggessive on P690 Regatta solution. Discussed with Roger and
Susan Minai-Azary. A followup meeting may be needed with MIT management
and IBM regarding AIX as interium solution while TSM on Linux is being
developed. An updated Regatta cost spreadsheet is in the works to help
determine the if this should be pursued.
Key learnings:
- TSM Linux server solution not available until Jan-March 2003 timeframe.
- IBM 'Regatta' hardware solution running native Linux OS availabile
May 2002.
- TSM user community very satisfied with Sun solutions.
- More confirmations regarding equality of TSM/AIX and TSM/Solaris
functionality from Tivoli reps and tech support.
- TSM VM cost model indicates break even point at ~$14/mo client cost.
Team dynamics:
- Good.
Additonal comments:
- Project extended to mid May due to complexities of issues 'discovered'
and mentioned above.
- Shoe size, 10EEE.
