Project Name: Facilities-MIS Strategic Planning
Project Leaders: Anne Whealan, Tim McGovern
Report Date: Feb. 24, 1999
Project Notebook: http://web.mit.edu/is/discovery/plant-sp/ .\/
Accomplishments past period
- Completed final report that went to sponsor & Facilities'
leadership teams.
- Met with project sponsor, and received her feedback on report's
shortcomings.
Goals for the coming period
- Meet with Facilities' leadership teams.
- In parallel, begin to address the report's defects.
- Develop briefing materials for sponsor, in preparation for her meetings
with Jim Bruce, CIO and John Curry, EVP.
Issues
- Some of the defects that were identified were the result of constraints
that we were unable to elicit earlier in the project, e.g., staffing,
funding, and other variables.
- Some of the defects were well-known to me but resulted from some reluctance
on the part of affected teams & their leaders to 'fess up to problems.
- I did not discover how to write a report that is the product of a consensus
based process that tells the unvarnished truth about individual's and teams
that are represented in the planning team
Key learnings
- A good sponsor needs to hear what's NOT being allowed to surface _earlier_.
Team dynamics
- The planning process has gone on too long, and the team is tired. The
sponsor
is also eager to begin implementation. Some team members fear that the link
between the new work that is expected and the staffing/funding requests
will be lost, and the whole effort will go down in flames!
Additional comments
- The end is in sight.
