Project Name: EHSS - Environmental Health & Safety Management System
Project Leader: Rob Smyser, Rocklyn Clarke
Report Date Jan 3, 2001
Submitted by: Rob Smyser
URL: http://web.mit.edu/is/discovery/ehss/

Accomplishments since last report:
- successive meetings convened by JLK with the like of Jim Morgan, Chuck
Shaw, Larry Connelly, Diane Shea, and the rest of the EHSS crowd.
Generally achieved closure on the idea of SAP as the ultimate owner of EHS
data. Inventory tracking could be SAP or EMAX, but EMAX would have to
syncronize its data with SAP to support EHS reporting. Electronic
Procurement is an open question -- ChemDex has withdrawn from the eCommerce
playing field, leaving SciQuest to occupy close to a sole-source position.
As a result SciQuest will now charge at least $100K for an ECAT project.

- Chemistry came forward as committed to using an EHS to track its chemical
inventory and compliance. Chemistry represents 40% or more of the volume
that would be managed. They heard EPO was looking at systems and decided
to see if they could use what we choose. Very happy coincidence.

- meetings held with EPO and SPO to discuss common solution to their
separate regulatory training requirements. This will spawn a discovery
effort by Greg.

Goals for the coming period:
- Generate RFP for Vendors
- Finish discovery report
- Plan for continuation of the effort post-RFP.

Issues:

Key learnings:
- The eCommerce and Regulatory environments in which this project operates
are subject to significant changes over time. EPA is moving towards a
formal "judgement" with respect to MIT -- training tracking and
container-level tracking with barcoding are likely to be major compliance
requirements.

Team dynamics:
- nothing new to report

Additional comments:
- Project sponsor is ready to declare discovery a success and move on.
