I/T Discovery Process
Quarterly Report: 1st Quarter, FY2001
(July, August, September)
=85 Overview:
In the first Quarter, Discovery continued to fulfill the IS Vision
(Qualtiy, Service, Value, and Leadership) by delivering products to satisfy
customers, identifying trends, and seeking alignment. As a process,
Discovery worked to improve organizational effectiveness, competencies, and
involvement..
The highlight for customer satisfaction was the completion of the
One-to-One Student Computing Discovery Project. Sponsored by the MITCET
Infrastructure Group, this project collected and analyzed information and
delivered recommendations that will set the strategic directions for
student computing integrated with the Institute's academic programs.
Another highlight was the completion of the High Speed Residential
Computing Discovery project. The project represents the value of Discovery
when the answer is "no, not now." The project recommended that IS not
become an ISP for residential use by the MIT community. Further, the
project determined that DSL services were not comprehensive, reliable, or
offered advantages for IS to engage in a preferred partnership. This
analysis represent savings for IS and MIT in terms of averting additional
effort, customer expectations, and additional costs at the risk of marginal
value added.
Trends identified for Discovery continue to focus on the broad range of
Academic Computing initiatives. The I/T implications of the MIT Council on
Educational Technology are very large and will have great impact on IS. The
CET summer project on Lifelong Learning (a collaborative effort with
Discovery participation) presented its recommendations to the Executive
sponsors in early October. As mentioned, One-to-One Student Computing
completed its project. As the quarter closed, Discovery was contacted
regarding participation and leadership services for MIT Advising, a
D/arbeloff sponsored project lead by the Dean for Undergraduate Education,
Office of Academic Services. This project, too, will have IT implications
for both IS and SSIT.
=46or alignment and influence, the first quarter represented the fruition of
a number of longer term projects. The MIT Libraries completed a large,
collaborative Discovery project,:the selection of their vendor for their
3rd Barton integrated library management systems. Working with colleague IT
and business units such as this provide IS an opportunity to contribute and
influence major, high-impact initiatives.
Covering the Discovery and Delivery components of the On-Line Credit Card
Processing project, Lorraine Rappaport and Bob Ferrara delivered a
presentation at Educause.
As a major contribution to the way IS conducts and aligns its project work,
Matt Brody led the effort to organize the IS Project Management web pages.
This work makes the body of information for project management more
accessible, direct, and focused for the practicing project manager.

=85 Possibility of a follow-on pilot for One-to-One Student Computing
Large new commitments in Q2 include:
=85 Communicating Information to Customers about IS Products, Services, and
Support - IS Theme 1 top commitment.

=85 The MITCET initiatives.
In Q2, Discovery will focus on process activities such as:
=85 Presenting a seminar on Discovery to IT colleagues at Brandeis
=85 Reworking and streamlining of the Discovery web pages
=85 Disposition of the pending, planning, and on-hold projects; this is an
ITLT conversation regarding priorities and resources.
