Hello everyone,

	The last time we met, I read excerpts from the whiteboard notes that
were captured when ITLT discussed the 5YP. I thought it useful to
repeat them here for all of us. Although I think that we should
recognize efforts that are already underway to 'work differently' in
the manner suggested below, there is renewed emphasis for all of IS to
work more consistently with these habits.

	So, as early adopters, I congratulate you, and I think that your work
habits can help serve as continuing examples for all of us.

Greg

Executing the 5YP Plan

What do we mean by "doing work differently"?

<underline>NOTE: </underline> we're doing many of these; we need to do
<underline>more</underline> of them and <underline>more
consistently</underline>

+ Project work is done by teams composed of team members at
<underline>20-30-50% time;

</underline>

+<underline> Work needs to be clearly defined</underline>

+<underline> Strong leadership</underline> is essential

+ Teams commit to<underline> project management</underline> (with
project plans and timelines)

+<underline> Resources are defined:</underline> teams are fully
staffed; committed resources/team members are protected from
interruption

+ Teams need to <underline>work across boundaries</underline>; change
is involved. This implies that:  results of teams will be implemented;
leadership needs to support and trust the team

+ Need to <underline>recognize and reward</underline> efforts, both
successes and failures

+ Need to understand impacts and dependencies (part of project
management)

+ Making clear choices public

+ Separate operational demands from project work (and vice versa). This
implies:

	<underline>behavioral/attitudinal change:</underline> getting people
to put on another hat

	Don't equate projects with meetings

	<underline>Don't subordinate projects to operations</underline>;
projects and project

	management are REAL work

+ Teams need to be <underline>accountable</underline> for meeting plan
. . .

+ Needs to be ongoing attention to <underline>customer needs and
interests and priorities

</underline>+ Need to involve <underline>Practices</underline> in work

+ Need for <underline>communication</underline>; teams need to
communicate; re, project plan

+ Teams need to tell us how to <underline>measure</underline> results
of work

+ <underline>Implementation</underline> needs to happen . . .

+ <underline>Planning</underline> will be given time and rewarded
