Good afternoon,

I'm pleased to announce the launch of a Discovery project to explore the
provision of IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) service at MIT. The
Discovery team for this project will evaluate alternatives for electronic
mail services enabled by IMAP. Within the scope of the project is ensuring
that IS has in place the necessary support and training services to ensure
that customers are able to efficiently and reliably access these services.

This work is driven by the desire to offer additional email services to the
MIT community and because ongoing upgrades to the MIT electronic mail
(email) infrastructure now make it possible for IS to offer IMAP in
addition to the POP email services we provided today.

Since IMAP handles email differently and presents new functionality to the
user, it requires careful preparation and various decisions about how IS
will make this new service available. This Discovery team will investigate
the essential functions for IMAP email clients, identify and recommend
potential IMAP email clients for formal IS support, and ensure that the
necessary user support and training resources are in place to support these
new services.

Because of its implications for one of MIT's fundamental communications
tools, this project has significant enterprise-wide impact. The project is
important to the IS Strategic Plan; it is part of our Theme to deliver new
IT products and services to our customers and our Theme to deliver
operational services.

The project is co-sponsored by Practice Directors, Theresa Regan, Office
Computing and Dennis Baron, VDIN. Matt Brody is Project Team Leader, and
team members are Alicia Allen, Tom Coppeto, Phyllis Galt, and Oliver Thomas.

Among the areas of activities for the team will be evaluation of clients,
communication plan to the community, identifying policy issues, migration
issues, authentication and security, end-user support and service
requirements. The Discovery team will focus on some immediate deliverables.
The team has created a project page at:
<http://web.mit.edu/is/discovery/imap/IMAP%20Project%20Notebook.htm> For
additional information, please visit the team's project notebook or contact
them at imap-team@mit.edu.

Please join me in supporting this project. The outcomes of this project and
the resulting IMAP service present a solid addition to our service
offerings for MIT customers.

Thanks,
Greg
