Project Name: Spatial Data Services
Project Leader: Daniel Sheehan
Report Date Feb. 16, 2000

Accomplishments past period:

-Loaded software on test server.
-Loaded some test data to help understand the Oracle and SDE optimizing that we
need to do.
-Restarted effort to use USGS metadata->MARC converter.
-Worked out protocol for using Test Barton for spatial data records.
-Getting an understanding of the Libraries' commitment to storing spatial data
and providing GIS services.

Goals for the coming period:

-Move data onto the new server once all of the software is loaded.
-Use C API to load raster data (orthophotos and Digital Elevation Models [DEM])
into Oracle.
-Develop stronger relationship with USGS to enhance the testing of the
metadata->MARC converter.
-Refine the server: update all software, optimize Oracle and SDE.

Issues:

-Team decided that further outreach should be delayed until with have a firm
model of the service that could be modified. I believe we should get started
on outreach but do agree that we need a product to encourage participation by
faculty.

Key learnings:

-We moved some responsibility for working on the test server. This was
necessary for scheduling reasons but also because we need to utilize all of our
skills.

Team dynamics:
-We are getting better at understanding the process and accepting help from each
other. Greg's talk with the team on 2/28 was helpful.

Additional Comments:
-This is a big project and our timeline is getting stretched. We will avoid the
"big dig" syndrome by refining our goals and setting a realistic starting
service that will fulfill the wishes of the stakeholders for the near term.
