Project Name: Third Barton Project (Project to find a replacement
Library Management System)
Project Management Team: Nina Davis-Millis, Joan Kolias, Carl Jones
Report Date: December 17, 1999
URL: http:/macfadden.mit.edu:9500/c3/3dbarton

Accomplishments Past Period:

- Wrap-up Technical Review sessions with Integration Team members,
Susan Minai-Azary and Jeff Schiller.

- Made initial phone contacts with several vendor sites. Sites
include: Notre Dame (Ex-Libris), Emory U. (SIRSI), Carnegie Mellon
(SIRSI), Michigan State (III), Temple U. (III). We would like to
contact at least one other North American Ex-Libris
site. Unfortunately, there aren't many to choose from at this time,
since most North Amerian sites are scheduled to come up in late
spring
or summer. Also talked with one Endeavor site, Purdue U.

- Received security API from Ex-Libris; submitted completed
non-disclosure form to them for MIT only access to the API
documentation.
We also requested a look at some additional API's for handling
patron and
vendor data. We have not yet received these.

- Completed draft document for Steering Commmittee providing an
overiew of where we are currently in the selection process.

Goals for the coming period:

- Submit tentative dates for site visits in January.

- Make follow-up calls to sites, where our intent is to talk with
staff closer to specific functional areas.

- Begin drafting the Project Management Teams reviews for each
vendor. Joan K. has created a form for this purpose.

- Forward Ex-Libris security API document to Jeff Schiller.

Key Learnings: none

Issues:

- Timing of the site visits in January. We'd like to get these
done as expediently as possible.

- So far, with only one very interesting exception, virtually
every site
we've talked to has been very enthusiastic about their system. Let it
be noted we have only talked with Systems Office level staff so
far. Hopefully talking with staff who are closer to the actual
functional areas will help us to determine how deeply these
sentiments
run.

Team Dynamics: none
