Project Name: LLAMA (Layered Linux Athena Machine Administration)
Project Leader: Naomi Schmidt
Report Date Nov. 17, 1999
Submitted by: Naomi Schmidt
URL: http://web.mit.edu/acs/llama/
Accomplishments past period:
- Reviewed third party software license terms for possible
restrictions re Layered Linux Athena machines
- Arrived at definition of terms to enable us to develop
means of complying with license terms
- Developed plan for restricting access to third party
software where necessary either to comply with
license terms or to recover costs
- Developed plan for registration of Layered Linux Athena
machines that want access to restricted software
- Reached consensus on Levels of Support for various
configurations of Standard Install Linux Athena and
Layered Linux Athena
- Reviewed options for hardware maintenance on both Layered
and Standard Install Linux Athena
- Wrote and circulated w/in team first draft of Discovery Report
containing recommendations
Goals for the coming period:
- Reach consensus on a few remaining open questions
- Reach final decision on fees for triage/hotline/3partysw and
see if there are implication for changing Athena Service
fees on other Athena platforms
- Finish up Discovery Report
Issues:
- Need to decide how to treat machines that IS/Academic
Computing grants to departments as far as Layered vs
Standard Linux Athena is treated
- DELL warranty service done by PC Service does not cover their
costs; this is true irrespective of OS being run on the
machine, but there is concern that the number of machines
will increase once Layered LA is supported by IS
- There are still some questions re a few specific third party
software licenses
- How will be the availability of Layered Linux Athena affect
the decisions of customers who now have Standard Sun/SGI
Athena when it comes time to renew?
Key learnings:
- Even very complex problems are solvable when you get some good
minds working together on them
Team dynamics:
- Now that the major thorny problems have been worked out, need
cooperation in the more mundane process of writing and
reviewing the Discovery Report
