The Science section of the NYT has an interesting article commemorating the
first arpanet exchange of messages on Oct. 29, 1969.

There are some interesting references to Van Bush's "As we may think"
article in the Atlantic Monthly in 1945 and to J.R. Licklider's visionary
piece, "The computer as a communications device".
