IN FOCUS

<bigger>Courses, Resources & Commerce: Do You Portal?
</bigger><<http://www.lightspan.com>Lightspan Partnership is
looking to put your school online. And the company is not alone. Large
and small, start-up and established, everyone it seems is launching or
planning to launch an education portal. And a bevy of investors is
lining up to help them do it.
If You Build It, Will They Come?
<<http://www.campuspipeline.com>Campus Pipeline, a
self-described "enterprise portal" for the postsecondary market,
recently secured $25 million from Oak Investment Partners, Hambrecht &
Quist, Thomas Weisel and others [see In The News, "Campus Pipeline
Secures $25 Million in Series A Funding," below - Ed.].
<<http://www.hungryminds.com>Hungry Minds, a new online education
venture which targets the lifelong learning market and promises to
launch an "online learning portal that will revolutionize education as
it is known today," has just completed a first round of financing
totaling $11 million, with investments from Steve Barrard, former CEO
of Blockbuster, Arthur Blank, CEO of Home Depot, and others [see In The
News, "Hungry Minds Completes $11 Million in Seed-Round Funding," below
- Ed.]. Even giants such as
<<http://www.microsoft.com/education/>Microsoft are jumping into the
game, with the world's leading software developer devoting $26.6
million in software and cash to the launch of its new K-12 targeted
Classroom Teacher Network, an online resource consisting of software
tutorials, lesson plans, seminars, links and forums [see In The News,
"Microsoft Helps Teachers Start the New School Year with Skills to
Improve Learning for Kids," below - Ed.].
With a combined K-12/postsecondary market opportunity encompassing some
4 million teachers, almost 60 million students, and approximately 50
million parents, it's easy to see why companies are rushing to secure
their share of the education portal land-grab. According to Jupiter
Communications, college students alone represent $4 billion a year in
spending power. That's why firms like
<<http://www.embark.com>Embark.com (formerly CollegeEdge), which
provides online resources for students applying for college, are
partnering with firms like Iconomy.com, a provider of "private-label
Internet stores" [see In The News, "Students Outfit Dorm Rooms in Style
with Embark.com Store Powered by Iconomy.com," below - Ed.]. At the
same time, firms like <<http://www.mybytes.com>MyBytes.com,
<<http://www.jenzabar.com>Jenzabar and others are vying to integrate
their proprietary online registration and tuition payment features with
universities' in-house ERP systems to get their piece of the
postsecondary pie [see In The News, "Colleges Get Free Web Pages, But
with a Catch: Advertising," below - Ed.].
And, like one of those late-night pocket-fisherman television
commercials, it doesn't stop there. College Broadcast has just
announced a partnership with <<http://www.ecollege.com>eCollege.com,
joining its "broadband Internet portal" to the eCollege.com Learning
Channel [see In The News, "College Broadcast and eCollege.com Sign
Marketing Agreement," below - Ed.]. <<http://www.zapme.com>ZapMe!
Corporation, developer of its own "broadband interactive network," has
announced an alliance with Dell Computer Corporation to run the ZapMe!
network on Dell PCs and servers [see "ZapMe! Announces Education
Alliance with Dell," below - Ed.].
At the same time, companies such as
<<http://www.nytimes.com/learning>The New York Times Learning Network
and <<http://www.highwired.net>Highwired.Net are launching new efforts
to provide teachers with online lesson plans and web site creation
tools [see In The News, "The New York Times Learning Network Expands
Offerings For Students, Parents and Teachers of Grades 3-12" &
Highwired.Net's "Classroom Web Site Builder Provides Educators with
Easy Tool for Creating Online Projects," below - Ed.]
Add to this list <<http://www.juniornet.com>JuniorNet,
<<http://www.smarterkids.com>SmarterKids.com,
<<http://www.classroomconnect.com>Classroom Connect,
<<http://www.powerschool.com>PowerSchool, and, of course,
<<http://www.familyeducation.com>FamilyEducation.com, which Media
Metrix recently called the highest performing education site as
demonstrated by size and growth of audience, and you've still only
begun to scratch the surface of the education portal marketplace [see
In The News, "Media Metrix Data Places FamilyEducation.com as Largest
Online K-12 Community of Parents and Educators," below - Ed.]. And
don't be surprised when other well-positioned Internet powerhouses
launch education portals of their own later this year.
The question is, in a marketplace so crowded, what will separate the
serious contenders from the might-have-beens?
Content and Distribution Are Key
Lightspan Partnership believes it has an answer.
=46ounded in 1995, the company has been built on the premise that
technology can help kids to learn and get families more involved in
their children's education. Since that time, the company has
transformed itself from a software and hardware merchant to, what
company senior vice president & general manager of Internet services
Winnie Weschler calls, a "niche portal for K-12 education online."
Building on the success of its Achieve Now curriculum, a reading,
language and math program which has been implemented in some 2,500
schools nationwide, the company has launched in turn the Lightspan
Network (a web-based educational content and curriculum subscription
service currently in use at a reported 2,000 schools), PageOne (a free
classroom-targeted web site development toolkit that has already
brought more than 20,000 teachers into the Lightspan fold), and Local
Connect (soon to be relaunched as Your School Online, a free web site
building tool for schools).
Moving online, the company has extended its efforts to create greater
educational equity and increased access to education for all students
through the deployment of educational technology by adding content,
tools and collaborative learning opportunities to its suite of
services. To that end, the company's staff has increased to 300, more
than a third of which is devoted to getting out the word about the
company's online offerings.
Weschler, former manager of Disney.com, sees Lightspan's development as
an inevitable consequence of changes in the way children learn. "In ten
years, learning online will be as natural as textbooks are today," she
told EduVentures. "We'll succeed because we're uniquely positioned
among the educational Internet content providers, in that we're the
only one with a field force of 120 staffers that understand marketing
and distributing to schools."
With investors like Vulcan Ventures, Microsoft, Kleiner Perkins,
Arcadia Partners, Tribune and others, the company has been able to
marshal significant resources to assist it in achieving its aims.
Investors in turn have applauded the company's focus on developing
content and scaling distribution. According to a partner at Arcadia, a
leading venture capital fund focused on the education industry that has
recently invested in the company, "Lightspan was among the first to see
the market opportunity and has moved quickly and strategically to
leverage its strong distribution network and broad content library."
How the portal wars ultimately shake out remains to be seen, but
Lightspan intends to be among the victors. In the coming months, the
company will continue to refine its portal strategy through the
development of new products and services, the expansion of its
e-commerce efforts, and the forging of new partnerships for content and
distribution.
Weschler feels she has reason to believe the company is onto something
big. "When we launched PageOne this June, we thought we'd get 10,000
teachers in the first six months," Weschler said. "Instead, we've
signed up 22,000 in ten weeks. We've far exceeded our expectations and
we want to keep up that momentum."
