ACCOMPLISHMENTS PAST PERIOD:

- Cattey, Stone, Comstock and Glavash met with Jerry Saltzer to discuss the
implications of scanning new paper theses.

- Received sample archival COM fiche from outside vendor and began analysis
of results.

- Tested a Fujitsu production scanner for possible use in scanning paper
theses.

- Larry set up a Web page for "pending" e-theses, showing which have been
submitted but not yet "released" online.

- There are now a total of 11 e-theses; five in the "released" area, and
six others received but pending release.

GOALS FOR THE COMING PERIOD:

- Continue to analyze results of the COM fiche test.

- Work with scanner representatives to identify equipment which could
satisfy our needs for thesis scanning.

ISSUES:

- Grayscale and color images in theses represent a substantial challenge
for a production scanning workflow. Such images are relatively rare, but
require different treatment from the rest. We need to find a combination
of software and hardware that can automatically identify and capture those
images to a different set of specifications, still retaining the overall
efficiency of a production environment.
