Project Name: Web Search Service
Project Leader: Joanne Hallisey
Report Date: August 8 , 2003
URL: http://web.mit.edu/is/discovery/search/
Accomplishments in July
- Set up Google Appliance and began to work with it to determine capabilities.
- Determined early that one collection and 300,000 pages are not
adequate for MIT Home Page needs.
- Paul Heffernan continued work on agreement for beta testing of 500,000 pages.
- Worked with search appliance
- Hubert Pham, team member, researched capabilities and demonstrated
the Google evaluation appliance
- experimented with search results
- the output looks (Std Google etc.)
- Acquired license to evaluate the upgrade of Ultraseek (Verity -
current search engine)
- Established a timeline for evaluating Google vs. Ultraseek
- Identified some issues:
- The Google CSS clashes with IS's; we have to be careful with customizations.
- Conference call with Google rep about what MIT would need fro
full-size indexing. He explained Google's terminology and approach
to defining collections.
Goals for August
- Need to clarify if Google differentiates between the documentation
of the XML being "confidential" or the actual XML is confidential.
- See how to prevent XML from showing.
- Narrow down the data sets for comparing Google with Ultraseek.
- Ask Google about SSL capacity for later use - August
Ongoing tasks
- Review rules for existing search service
- Determine final definition for data sets for new service
- Define rules for new service
- Contact Resources to determine how to appropriately thank Google
- Determine solution for conversion of query forms if required.
Next Community Milestone
- none scheduled
Issues
- none reported
