Hi,

A number of you are already aware of this, but I wanted to make sure
that you all were.

I'm pleased to announce that after work that was completed in the past
couple of weeks, the WIN.MIT.EDU domain is no longer dependent on the
w92 machine room for simple operations like logging in. Over the past
weeks, all three domain controllers for WIN were upgraded, and in the
process, one of them was moved from the w92 machine room to the w20
machine room. The two other two DCs are still in w92, though we plan
to move one of them to a third location on campus sometime in the next
six to eight months or so. Additionally, a second windows fileserver
was deployed to w20 (the first one is in w92) and the data that is
used in daily operation of the domain has been replicated between
them.

There are (and will probably always be) some functions that are
dependent on the w92 machine room. These include: RIS (network) based
installs (but not CD based installs where the machine is later joined
to the domain), and some non-critical cleanup that is done after a
machine is joined to the domain (which will happen later if a client
machine can't contact the w92 machine room).

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

	Jonathon
