Howdy,

*** IMPORTANT NOTICE: SERVER OUTAGE THIS AFTERNOON BEGINNING 2PM ***

You are receiving this message because you are either a primary or
secondary user of, or a support provider for, one or more of the
FileMaker databases that IS currently hosts in Building N42. You may
use the databases directly (using FileMaker) or indirectly (e.g.,
using the web pages that are served from the databases). In any case,
you and your customers will be affected by the following outage:

***In order to improve the service and reliability of these systems,
the servers that host these databases and deliver the web pages
from them WILL BE MOVED to W91 starting at about 2pm today. This
means that the databases, and the related web pages, WILL BE
UNAVAILABLE FROM 2PM TO AT LEAST 3PM TODAY.

The databases affected include all Training groups; Stock Answers;
Product Support Summaries; IS Work, Staff, and Vacation; OCSPA
Client/Premed systems; and a variety of others. (A complete list is
provided below.)

The move is expected to take about an hour, with databases being
fully reactivated before web service is, but of course unforeseen
issues might arise.

Every care is being taken that the old hostnames (training.mit.edu,
hdstock.mit.edu, iswork.mit.edu, train.mit.edu) will still work as
before, but the move does involve changing to new IP addresses, so
there may be unexpected issues accessing the databases in their new
home. In particular, if you use an "opener" file on your desktop
(e.g., one provided by me), it may have the old IP address hardcoded
and you will need to obtain a new "opener" from me. (I will send
detailed instructions after the move is completed this afternoon.)

This is the first step in a series of improvements to the systems.
The move to W91 puts the machines in an actual machine room with 24x7
reliable power supply, etc. Eventually, additional changes will be
made to the database/web server systems (more on these later), but
for now we are just moving the current machines in their current
configurations to a new home.

Thanks for your understanding,
--Kevin Cunningham, x3-0177
