Here's my rationale on this; I'm sure other people will have other
ideas.

You want your /vicepx partitions as large as possible (but not so
large that you can't dump/restore the whole thing conveniently; not an
issue if you're using DAT or 8mm tapes for backup).

-Is there any reason not to make large AFS volumes?

You want your volumes to be as small as is reasonable, because they
are the atomic unit of backup, replication, and administration. If
you want to move a 100MB volume, you need to find 100meg free in one
piece on another partition, which may be hard to do.

Smaller volumes give you more room to maneuver when moving them
around.

In addition, certain operations (such as the "vos backup" and the
final stage of a "vos move") lock out all users of the volume for the
duration of the volume; the smaller the volume, the quicker these
operations go.
