sun4_40 problem?

One of my (several) sun4_40 systems sporadically loses its link
to root.cell.readonly (/afs/northstar). The read-write volume
(/afs/.northstar) is still attached, and the tree is traversable.
No other machines seem to have this problem - root.cell.readonly
is visible from all others. I've tried flushing the cache (both
with "fs flush" and "fs ca 100"), but to no avail, and the cache
hasn't been full when the problem arose, anyway. None of the file
servers seem to report any problems.
Has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions for other
things to investigate? I'm still at AFS 3.1 on the sun4_40 - has
this problem been found and fixed by 3.1b?
Thanks.
Pat
