In order to honor license restrictions on software kept in our AFS
trees and to reduce load on external parts of the bboard system from
outside of CMU, the Andrew cell has begun to restrict parts of its
software and bboard trees to disallow access from networks not part of
CMU. These restrictions should be completely in place by the end of the
week.
Modifications have been made to the ptserver and fileserver processes
to support access restriction based on the network address of the
orginating request. We have placed the group, system:campusnet, on
access lists of our software trees. In order to access those parts of
the tree you must be on one of the networks that is a member of that
group (pts members system:campusnet -c andrew.cmu.edu).
I am willing to review on a case by case basis requests to lift these
restrictions. We are committed to promoting all forms of free and
open exchange through AFS, but are forced to impose these restrictions
to honor licensing restrictions and to reduce loads on the bboard
trees where the posts are available through other channels (ie, our
netnews and internet trees).
If you have any questions or comments please send me mail. We
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
