I *never* have my lv's span pv's. If one of the pv's goes belly up, then all of the other pv's are toast too! Just that much more data to restore. So, my philosophy: 1 disk = 1 partition = 1 logical volume. This method also makes it easy to move 1 of the partitions to another server using exportvg and importvg.
