Big problem with AFS on NeXT!

Yesterday I pulled down the next_mach20 binaries from Transarc. I pulled out
the installation manual, located the section on installing additional client
machines and proceeded to install AFS on my NeXT.

There didn't seem to be a whole lot to do. I went through and created /usr/vice,
/afs and so forth. I put in a very short CellDB file containing only the servers
for my local cell (so as not ot have the NeXT try to stat stuff all over the
globe). And I set it up to have a 50MB cache. So far, so good.

Then I went about making the kernel. With kl_util, this was a trivial
operation and it didn't take very long at all. Everything seemed just fine.
I invoked afsd and that too ran fine. No problems in evidence so far.

I modified /etc/kern_loader.conf on the NeXT and added the call to afsd to
the /etc/rc file. Then I se my home directory to be my normal AFS home and
rebooted.

Soon I got the usual login panel on the NeXT and I tried to log in. That's when
I saw a problem. I typed in my name and my password and the NeXT obviously
verified that everything was ok as the login panel went away. But my workspace
didn't show up! All I got was a grey screen with a little spinning disk.
And that disk just continued to sit there and spin and spin and spin.....
Nothing happened.

Ok, I tried to log in remotely and that part was just fine. It appears that
AFS is working alright. But there's some kind of problem with logging in on
the NeXT console.

Does anyone know what might be the matter here? I don't have a great deal of
experience with NeXT's and I'm totally baffled.

On another topic, I can successfully go through klog on the NeXT. But most of
the regular AFS commands just come back with ``illegal instruction" or
some other error. Like tokens doesn't work at all. And neither does fs.
Help!
