AFS User and Administrative Questionnaires
A DARPA-sponsored research project is being conducted to determine the
extent to which the AFS distributed file system can improve or encourage
wide-area collaboration. As part of this work, a pair of questionnaires
have been written. The first questionnaire is aimed at any and all AFS
users, regardless of the extent of their experience with the system.
The second questionnaire is targeted specifically to AFS administrators.
It would be a great help to this project if you could fill out and
submit the appropriate questionnaire. Everything is available on-line
via AFS, and instructions are available in the following files:
/afs/grand.central.org/darpa/questionnaires/user/README
/afs/grand.central.org/darpa/questionnaires/admin/README
If you cannot get to these files directly for any reason, you can still
access them and participate in this project via anonymous FTP. In fact,
I'm including the text of the README file for the user questionnaire
below. It should take less than 15 minutes to answer the
(multiple-choice) questions. Aggregate results from these
questionnaires will be posted, without any reference to individual
responses.
This will provide you the opportunity to not only get counted among the
AFS users out there, but to express your opinions as to what is good and
bad about AFS.
Thanks in advance for participating in this quest!!

What and Why: Introduction
--------------------------
This questionnaire is intended to gather information regarding
Transarc's AFS wide-area distributed file system software, as seen
from the user's point of view. It is hoped that examination of
completed questionnaires will provide a clearer picture of how AFS is
being used, point out the system's strengths and weaknesses, and
perhaps lead to improvements reflecting community interests. This is
part of a broader DARPA-sponsored study of the AFS software.
This questionnaire contains multiple-choice questions addressing
perceptions on such topics as the AFS feature set, the kinds of
applications to which AFS is being applied, the level of interaction
between people at different AFS sites, and the types of AFS training
made available to the general user population. Users are invited to
supplement these multiple-choice questions with additional comments if
they desire.
Who: Who Should Fill This Out
-----------------------------
Each and every AFS user is invited to fill out this questionnaire, and
thus have his or her opinions regarding the system taken into
consideration.
How: Instructions
-----------------
Please make a local copy of the user questionnaire and fill it out as
completely as possible. As noted above, the questionnaire's reference
copy is in /afs/grand.central.org/darpa/questionnaires/user/user.q.
The local file copy you're filling in should be named according to the
following format:
<user>-<cellname>-user.q
Thus, user ``erz'' in cell ``transarc.com'' would name his local copy
of the questionnaire file as follows:
erz-transarc.com-user.q
Please deposit the completed questionnaire file into the following
directory:
/afs/grand.central.org/darpa/questionnaires/user/dropoff
If you are an AFS user that is not connected to the public Internet,
you will most likely not be able to deposit completed questionnaires
in this fashion. People in this situation may use either of the
following two options:
1. Anonymous FTP: Users may connect to the grand.central.org host
(IP address 192.54.226.100) as user ``anonymous'', providing
their login name and organizational affiliation as the password.
The reference copy of the questionnaire is available in
pub/questionnaires/user/user.q. The completed questionnaire
may then be inserted into the pub/questionnaires/user/dropoff
directory.
2. E-mail: Users may also deliver completed questionnaires by
mailing them to erz@transarc.com.
*** PLEASE NOTE ***
Once inserted into the dropoff directory, the submitted
questionnaire cannot be altered. This dropoff directory is a
write-once area, preventing people from making changes to the
form once submitted. Thus, please make sure you deliver only
the final copy of the form.
How Long: Expected Completion Time
----------------------------------
Respondents answering the multiple-choice questions without any
additional sidebar comments should be able to complete the survey in
15 minutes.
Thank You!
----------
I would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and
assistance. This form of user input will contribute towards
understanding how AFS impacts its user population, and will serve to
improve the file system service (local- and wide-area) offered by AFS.
