Another option is to have an option in the browser thas has it not stat
files/directories until someone clicks on the specific entry. That way
you can show what's there and there will not be a nice little arrow to
indicate it is a directory, but you will not kill the machine. I know
everything in /afs is a directory and don't need for it to tell me.
