Thanks for all your help. To summarize, it looks like the solution
to the first problem is to get an AFS-smart loginwindow app. I'm
trying to contact Transarc to get the latest official release.
There were many options for solving the second problem:
a) Create a symlink from /cmf to /afs/cmf and put users home
directories in /cmf/users/...
b) Add afs to the /.hidden file so it doesn't show up in the
browser. This is done in conjunction with (a).
c) Create an /afs/sites subdirectory and mount all remote sites in
the subdirectory.
