At Notre Dame, we solved the problem (and associated problems with
FileManager on Suns) by just moving all external cell mount points to
a subdirectory of afs called "sites". e.g. the cell ifs.umich.edu
is mounted at
/afs/sites/ifs.umich.edu
I know, it conflicts with the standard scheme, but it fixed *so* many
other problems that we were having, that we're sticking with it.....
