Henry,

Please refer to section 17.3 of the AFS System Administrator's Guide.
That section discusses passwords in the local password file and
authentication to AFS.  If a user does provide the correct AFS password
and you are running the Transarc version of login, the user will
automatically be authenticated to AFS and logs that user into the
local file system without consulting the local /etc/passwd
(regardless if the password is the same or not).
