I know that the version of AFS that was designed for Ultrix 4.0 and 4.1
will work on 4.2 (with a couple of caveats). We ran it on a DECstation
running 4.2 long before it was announced.
The couple caveats (I do not know if these were fixed by Transarc, but
we did report them):
o The version that was designed for Ultrix 4.0 and 4.1 needs to be
changed slightly if you also wish to be using CDrom filesystems;
(GT_AFS should be changed from 8 to 9); a new filesystem type was
introduced and conflicts with what AFS formerly used. There will
be no obvious errors immediately, as it will appear to work, but
we upped ours to be safe.
o AFS does not seem to work with kernels that are compiled with the SMP
option; this shared memory socket interface seems to cause AFS to
panic very quickly (we have a VAX 9000, 2 processor system, on which
we attempted to run AFS, and even in single-processor mode, it died
and we suspect but have not fully proven that the cause is the kernel
being compiled with the SMP option).
