Hello all,

We support a large number of CAE application users here. One problem we have
had when using a system like Hesiod is getting the application vendors we
use to link their code with shared libraries under SunOS. You would be
suprised at the number of schematic capture, logic simulation and board
layout packages that use static libraries when dynamic library capability is
available. I am not talking about their own libraries being sharable, I
am talking about their applications being linked with a static libc. Of
course, this makes using a system like Hesiod almost impossible as we put
our modified system library functions in the sharable libc.

Systems like DNS will not work as well for the same reasons. We have had
to continually fight to get our CAE tool vendors to link dynamically. I
have heard that one of the compatibility requirements with Solaris 2.0 is
to migrate to dynamic libraries. I wonder what the app. vendors will do
when this is available. I suppose they will be forced to move in this
direction.

I am interested in knowing if others have had this same problem with
3rd party applications and shared libraries.
