A standards-making body competes for mindshare. If someone is making
tainted standards, others will form their own. Look at
the Sun vs. HP Java wars.
It would be a damn shame if the IETF lost credibility/control this way, but
he who lies with swine wakes with fleas,
and may find future partners unwilling to associate.
