Not to beat a dead horse, but is there some reason why this list is set up
to forward mail from non list-members? I'd think that changing this would
dramatically reduce the amount of junkmail on here.

Well first off, it isn't 'this list'. It consists of 6 nodes (and a
potential 7th one), not counting toad.com, that share raw traffic prior to any
filtering or other munging. Each node is free to impliment whatever polices
they see fit and are willing to bear the flack over. In short we're a bunch of
independant cusses.
SSZ doesn't source filter, or any sort of filter for that matter (excluding
the loop filtering we do against SSZ itself if you want to count it), for the
simple reason I believe it's YOUR job to decide what gets filtered and when.
I simply refuse to take on that responsibility. It also significantly
increase the frustration factor for non-list members who want to become list
members or have some issue they want to present. It will also prevent any past
members from submitting material of relevance to the list without rejoining the
list. That seems extreme to me as well. In short, I take the term
'unmoderated' at it's most base definition - keep your hands off other
people speech going through my digital press; once it hits your box do with
it as you will.
You're welcome to start your own node and filter as you see fit. You could
impliment this by grabbing the current subscription list from each remailer
and using this on your node. Seems like a pretty simple cron job. If you
decide to participate please forward me a brief description of your policies
and I'll update the SSZ CDR webpage accordingly.
