That's interesting, I get a slightly different impression from the image.

It looks to me like a spark gap at the foci of a parabolic horizontal
reflector/focuser. Above and below the plane of the focuser were two
horizontal wave-guides. The rear, or small side, would be co-axial with the
spark gap. This would have the effect of focusing the majority of the spark
gaps output into a roughly horizontal beam.

I especialy like the 20 ft. range that was reported in The Register.
