The premier issue of Interactive Publishing Alert is now available.
This month's issue contains an analysis of the pro's and con's of
hooking up with a major online service versus setting up a stand-alone
computer bulletin board; an interview with Tom Mandel, the management
consultant who helps Time magazine run its board on America Online;
a profile of The Electronic Trib, The Albuquerque Tribune's online
publication; legal advice on electronic publishing rights from cyber-
lawyer and author Lance Rose; a sampling of reader opinion on the
pro's and con's of reading Atlantic Monthly online, plus a roundup of
some of the latest online publishing deals and excerpts from recent
articles about online services and interactive publishing alliances.
Here are some of the highlights:
* Tom Mandel, the management consultant who helps manage the
Time Online bulletin board on America Line: "In the long run, I
believe the online services will be like newsstands; we wont
see much differentiation between them. In fact, they could be
dinosaur businesses."
* Author and cyber-lawyer Lance Rose on publishers' negotiating
for electronic rights from well-known writers: "The authors who
do have leverage will probably not grant all rights to their
publishers, so publishers will need to develop sophisticated
systems to keep track of which rights authors grant for various
articles. For established writers, there may eventually be an
acknowledged arena where they routinely compete with their own
publishers."
* Roy Buergi, editor of The Electronic Tribune in Albuquerque,
N.M.: "[Then-managing editor] Jack McElroy wanted to show that
a small newspaper could have a sustainable videotext system. He
wanted to prove that you didn't have to be one of the big guys
to use the technology."
Interactive Publishing Alert, a monthly online newsletter tracking
developments in interactive publishing and electronic media, provides
solid, hands-on information and advice for publishers thinking about
going online and for those publications that have ventured online
already. Each issue will contain a timely analysis of current trends
plus interviews with key managers and decision-makers and case studies
of publications that are doing things right (and wrong!). Future issues
will explore online advertising, Internet storefronts, multimedia, and
other topics related to interactive publishing. There will be no warmed-
over press releases, just good, old-fashioned reporting and analysis.
