Subject: CBC Radio on the Internet
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is exploring additional
means of distributing its programming. Working with the New Broadcast
Services Laboratory of the Communications Research Centre and the
Communications Development and Planning Branch of Industry Canada, CBC
is starting a trial where some radio programs will be available over
the Internet. These programs are available "on-demand" from a server
located at CRC, and can be accessed via WWW, Gopher, and FTP:

Gopher: debra.dgbt.doc.ca (select "CBC Radio Trial")
FTP (anonymous): debra.dgbt.doc.ca:/pub/cbc
NOTE: the preferred method of access is via WWW using the NCSA Mosaic
client.
The Radio programs are stored as 8-bit, 8 KHz "au" files as recorded on
a Sun SPARCstation. A tools area currently contains the DOS "sox"
program to convert these files into WAV or VOC files for PC sound
cards.
The special radio programs that are currently available include:
Stories for Christmas with Fireside Al
The Idea of Canada
and samples of the following popular weekly programs:
Quirks & Quarks
Sunday Morning
Basic Black
More programs will be added in the future.
The programs have been broken into segments so only small portions have
to be downloaded at a time.
In addition to the audio files, a list of CBC Radio products is
available, and the complete catalog of "Ideas" transcripts.
