I first heard the term "cream skimming" used by AT&T to describe the
marketing tactics of MCI, back when MCI was just getting started.
AT&T was trying to make the case that allowing MCI to grab the most
profitable customers would threaten the nationwide rate averaging
that kept home phone rates low.
