Not only the Japanese press but also business here is
showing ever-increasing interest. As you may know, three
companies have recently started offering commercial
IP connection services, including AT&T Jens (Spin service),
InterCon International, and Internet Initiative (IIJ).
AT&T Jens and InterCon International co-sponsored a
free symposium yesterday (Nov 29) dealing with commercial
Internet connection, featuring presentations by Susan
Estrada of Aldea Communications, Japanese "Internet
Samurai" Jun Murai, Dr. Shigeki Gotoh of NTT, and Dr.
Haruhisa Ishida of Tokyo University.
This was the second such seminar in three months and we
had a strong turnout of about 350 or 400 people. I
would bet that the IBM seminar will also be a success,
though the cost may hold attendance down a little.

The Japanese press's interest in the Internet appears
to be increasing. Maybe some people saw this but, the
evening edition of Friday's (Nov.26) Nikkei newspaper
had a half page ad for a seminar on the Internet.
The seminar is sponsored by Nikkei and IBM Japan. Featured
speaker is Mr. Eric Aupperle, President of Merit Inc. and
an NSF Net Executive Committee member. Also scheduled to
speak is Dr. Bharath Kadaba, director of IBM's High
Performance Computing & Communications division and also
an NSF Net Executive Committee member. The seminar is set
for Friday Dec. 3 from PM1:00 to 5:00 at the New Otani
