Voice Telephony on the Internet?
I am curious to find out if anybody is doing leading edge research
into carrying Constant Bit Rate traffic like voice telephony on the
Internet? I realize that the current TCP/IP protocol stack does not
support such applications, but with the advent of ATM, collapsed
backbones, and high bandwidth circuits it should be theoretically
possible to carry such traffic. Although there are many testbeds such
as Aurora and others that are experimenting with real time multimedia,
high bandwidth applications, it seems to me, that it will be some time
before these applications are in widespread usage. A more practical
application would be to carry simple real time voice telephony. With the
recent developments in voice compression technology, it might even be
possible to carry such traffic on existing Internet facilities, if we
could somehow prioritize the voce traffic.
Is anybody looking to see if any of the proposed IPng's can carry
constant bit rate traffic? How about the router's, etc etc? What are
the issues in migrating from a store and forward to real time or
hybird architecture?
Of course, there are the many regulatory issues which will have to be
addressed..... But, it would be an intersting experiment if we could
operate long distance voice telephony on a similar model as the
Internet currently operates today.
Any information or comment would be appreciated.
