Well, frankly, in terms of human support (a LARGE component of costs)
the amount of support required seems to be inversely proportional
to the speed of interconnection.
I suspect we lose money on a lot of our SLIP connections.
As to why someone would lose money, they're called "loss leaders".
Give the guy a cheap connection, get him hooked, then make your money
on the "upgrades"
(TCP/IP the newest form of "drug" addiction...)
