Perhaps dismissal of packet radio in the classroom is unwarranted

 Brian..... Dave Hughes is the packet radio expert not I.   But I have seen 
 him demonstrate a 9600 transciever with a 1/4 mile sending radius that I 
 am told requires NO license.  That's 9600 BAUD with TCP/IP built in.  
 Attach one end to a modem in the principal's office and the other at the 
 host to the NREN in the classroom.  And since it is not much bigger than a 
 package of cigarettes, move it from host to host leaving the receiving end 
 in the principal's office. . . presumably not more than 440 yards from the 
 furthest classroom.
