whenever you hear a monthly price charged, it's a lie; any monthly price
can be turned into a different monthly price if you pay more of the costs
up front.  the relationship will depend on cost of capital, availability
of credit, expectation of cost changes in the future, etc.  some organizations
will be more flexible than others, and they may charge you more or less
for the privelege.  (think of the difference between owning, leasing, or
renting a car, and in what situations you'd want to do each.)

"work" might be an industrial behemoth not equipped to introduce
the security risk of home access, or it might not care to support
you.  

or, you might be a professional with your own consulting business on
the side and have the need to do your work independent of your day
job.
