I have strong sympathies with those here who have bemoaned the lack of
the basic necessities in our school systems. On the other hand, I see
free access to information as a tremendous leveling influence for
society. The touchy part is to apply technology in the most strategic
way we can to accomplish the goals we wish to see accomplished. That
is an intensely personal decision for each of us.

Now there is something that people can do at a grass roots level.
Donate time and discarded hardware to the school of your choice
(the hardware doesn't cut it if you can't spend the time to help
someone in the school learn how to use it).

Your very presence in the classroom or study hall will send a strong
message to the students, and that may turn out to be more important
than the accomplishment of the task!

Also, please remember that schools aren't the only ones who might
benefit from your generous contributions of time and equipment. Many
other groups like your local child abuse prevention hotline or an
international famine relief agency or Bible translation mission have
needs for funding, equipment to run their databases, and ease of
communication with like agencies elsewhere. Invest your time and
expertise where it will make a difference in the world, not just pay
the mortgage.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled network
commercialization show...
